The Dragon Theory

Some people believe that the Jersey Devil could be a descendant of the dragon, since many descriptions of the Jersey Devil are similar to the descriptions of dragons. Maybe the ancient tales of dragons actually had some factual basis?
 
Similarities:  Both creatures are said to have long necks, wings, and the ability to fly (some descriptions of the Jersey Devil have even claimed that the creature breathed fire like a dragon as well).
 
Conflicts:  Dragons are usually regarded as mythical beasts that did not actually exist. But who knows for certain? I for one am a firm believer in the idea that all myths had some factual basis at some point in time...
