Jersey Devil Legend Oddities
There are many strange oddities surrounding the legend of the Jersey Devil. Below are the descriptions of some of the most common ones.
| The Fire Connection |
|
Seen With Company |
| Fire has been interlaced within the legend for many years. Some sightings
have claimed that the Jersey Devil has the ability to shoot flames out of its nostrils and mouth. Other
sighting reports hint that the creature may be attracted to fire, as it has turned up several times
during bonfires. But even more interestingly enough, many items that have connections to the legend
have burned. The supposed birthplace burned down some time between 1951 and 1952... Paintings have caught
on fire overnight and burned down entire buildings... There's even a story about a burning tree in
Leeds Point (see the Hunts section for our investigation)... |
|
Some people have claimed to see the Jersey Devil walking along the beaches
of New Jersey with a headless pirate and a girl in a white, flowing dress... The Jersey Devil has also
been seen with the "white stag". According to legend, this may be the same white stag that supposedly
appeared before the Quakers to warn them of a bridge ahead that had collapsed during a storm. (This was
the bridge known as the Quaker Bridge.) It seems absurd, yet there have been several sightings like that...
Could all of our local legends be colliding? Or is the Jersey Devil lonely? |

Strange Disappearances |
| Some people believe that a Jersey Devil sighting means more than just seeing
a strange creature... They believe it its appearance is a warning of impending doom. The Jersey Devil has
been seen at the beginning of all major wars, including the Revolutionary War, Civil War and even the first Gulf
Crisis in the early 1990's. Many people believe that, if you see the Jersey Devil, beware, for something bad is
about to happen... |
|
Many things related
to the Jersey Devil tend to suddenly disappear without explanation. Footprints suddenly stop;
paintings go missing, never recovered; we've even had our own Devil Hunting disappearance experience
- two rocks removed from the house foundation strangely disappeared from a locked car overnight, for which
we still have no explanation. An old Native American legend tells of a group of hunters who tried to
locate and kill the Jersey Devil after it began attacking their livestock. These skilled hunters went
into the woods and found nothing. In the months that followed their excursion, one by one each member of
the hunting party disappeared, presumed dead but never found, seen or heard from again. |
| The Jersey Devil Skull |
| In Winslow Township, NJ, for the price of $1, you can stop by a local fruitstand and have a look at what the owner claims is the skull of the Jersey Devil. The origins of the skull are still up for questioning. Have a look at the images below for a free glimpse of the skull. |
