Hunt #30 - October 8th, 2004

The filming of "Hometown Tales"
Location:
Leeds Point, NJ

Crew:
Laura K. Leuter, Belinda Connolly, Charley Lolio, Mary Connolly

What better way to kick off the fall season than with a visit to Leeds Point? We headed out to the house foundation with Gene and Wendy, the crew of "Hometown Tales", so that they could get a look at Jersey Devil territory first hand.

Immediately upon our arrival to the house foundation, we were shocked. The area has changed dramatically again! Granted, we haven't been out here in a very long time, but still, we were not expecting what we found. The entrance to where we usually enter the area had been blocked by a pile of leaves and dirt. And I mean a big pile, Charley attempted to go over it in the jeep and we stopped him due to the risk of tipping. This was definitely a dumped pile, but we have no idea who would have dumped it. We also didn't see any other piles like this anywhere else.

Once we finally got the cars parked and situated, we headed back in to visit the cemetery. It's getting very hard to find at this point, it's incredibly overgrown and headstones have fallen or been knocked over. Some of the headstones are so old that they're impossible to read. It's an impressive little cemetery.

After the stop at the cemetery, we were on our way to the house foundation. The normal path didn't surprise me, most of the trails were exactly as I had remembered them from the years before. But then we came to one of the main paths, and that was amazing! The path, which at one point had been a good 6 or 8 feet wide, was now only about 4 feet wide, and mostly overgrown. We snuck our way through the brush and finally arrived at the house foundation.

The house looks very alive at the moment. It is completely overgrown with foliage, so it's somewhat hard to see. I had reported a while back that the house foundation had been crumbling and getting worse and worse each time we visited - well the good news is that the house looked well preserved last night, and not much change had occurred (which is surprising, considering the rain we've had this year).

After the film crew got some shots of the house, we headed out on the trails. We returned to the location where we had found the ripped up birds on our hunt with the Philadelphia Inquirer. No dead birds this time, though. Just a dock with a beautiful view of Atlantic City in the distance.

Then we started hearing noises in the trees surrounding us. It was like something was scrambling through the branches at times. We dismissed the noises, figuring it was probably a squirrel or other small creature. As we were walking down the trail, however, we heard something much bigger in the trees. We had been listening to a bird chirping (which I thought was strange, since we usually don't hear that type of bird chirping at 10:00 at night in October). The large noise started on the right side of the trail in front of us, and then repeated on the left side of the trail in front of us, as though something had just run through and crossed our path. The noise subsided, and we continued on the trail.

When we returned to our cars to wrap up the night, once again we started to hear more noises. Most of the noises were simply acorns falling from the trees, which is not surprising given the time of year. However, there was one noise that we haven't figured out at this point. It sounded like metal hitting metal. Mary described it as sounding like chains or something similar. I guess we'll never know.

So, while it wasn't the most thrilling or exciting hunt ever, at least the noises are back and the area was interesting again! We're looking forward to future hunts that are not as dull as the past few have been!
