The Pine Barrens Chase

Location: Pine Barrens, NJ Date: November 3rd, 2004

My little brother and I were just walking around to find some interesting things in the Pine Barrens. It had only been about fifteen minutes while we were in there and everything had been pretty quiet. We were about to head home when we saw something moving in the distance about thirty feet away. My brother became a little scared but we thought it was just another person in the woods. But what happened next was the scariest time of my life.

We were about to walk away when we heard a horrible screeching noise. We turned around and the thing we had thought was another person was now only about fifteen feet away - and it was no person. Its wings were spread out and it was looking straight at us. We had no idea how it got so close without us hearing it. We just stared at it until it screeched again and then we turned and started running as fast as we could. We thought we could outrun it but then we heard it running with its hoof-like feet hitting the ground, getting louder and louder. Then the stomping just stopped and we thought it had given up the chase so we looked back to see if it had actually stopped. As we were turning around we saw this huge shadow go over us and then we saw it land in front of our path. Now it was only a few feet away from us. Again it let out its horrible screech at us. Me and my brother were paralyzed in pure shock from fear and couldn't move. The creature looked like it was going to start walking towards us when out of the corner of my eye I saw something else move. I turned in fear thinking it was another one but it was deer running past. The creature also turned to look at them. I then felt my brother tug on my arm and yelled run. We ran.

We didn't stop running until we heard nothing behind us. We ran a pretty good quarter of a mile when we stopped and looked back. We saw nothing but the Pine Barrens. We didn't trust our eyes though so we turned around and ran as fast as we could to our cousin's house. When we got there our family could tell we had been scared out of our wits. We told them what we had saw and me and my brother had not been known to lie or make up stories so our family was supportive. Since then I've been looking up stuff about the Jersey Devil and I know now that there is a devil in the Pine Barrens.

The creature was about six feet tall, with a wingspan of about 8 feet. It was a grayish brownish color with hooved feet and had horns like a ram. The head looked horse or dog like and it had arms like a gorilla.
