I was visiting my aunt and uncle who live in New Jersey with my parents. One night we were driving back home through the Pine Barrens after a fishing trip and we drove up to a right turn with a tree that stood right at the corner. As we approached the turn, a car drove up from the other lane and started to go left (past the tree at the corner) but suddenly it randomly swerved into our direction and sped inches past our car, almost hitting it. We thought to ourselves, "What the heck is that guy doing, driving like that?" but suddenly my uncle pointed up at the tree at the corner and yelled "OH MY GOD! What the hell is that!!?" We looked up at the tree and used the daylight still remaining to make the animal out that was crouching and staring at us.
The creature had these black wings that were tucked in and blocked by the tree branches (so I couldn't estimate its length); it had a very broad horse-looking face with pointed ears facing upwards and these very big glowing-amber eyes. It had what appeared to be hooves that were tucked in behind a few branches. The rest of its upper body resembled a horse's with a dark-brown colour, but since it was directly facing us and crouching I could only see its upper body. It was an extremley frightening encounter which I am hesitant to talk about even to this day.
