The Hiker's Sighting

Location: The Batona Trail, NJ Date: March, 1997

I was hiking on the Batona Trail outside of Apple Pie Hill (the highest point of the Barrens), making my way back to the Carranza memorial. It was around twilight. There is a point on the trail named "Tea; Time Hill", and I stopped to catch a breath and to take some water in. As I was putting on my headlamp (similar to a coal miner's lens), I heard some branches breaking. I thought someone else was lost and was making their way back to the trail. I quickly put on my light and scanned around. I saw nothing. I called out to them. Still nothing. To be honest, at this point I was scared. I didn't know what to make of it. Was it locals having fun or was it the Devil himself? Then I heard a blood curdling scream. That was enough for me! I ran for the life of me, I must've fallen about 5 times over the two miles back to the car. The entire time I kept hearing a heavy breathing, similar to a bull. It sounded like it was 20 yards behind me. I got to my car and quickly shut the door. When I slammed the door shut, I heard that scream again! I started my car and took off like a bat out of hell. I got home and my girlfriend at the time asked me what was wrong. She said I had a crazed look in my eyes, like I was terrified. I told her some THING was chasing me and I just barely made it back to the car. She asked me what it was and I replied..."the Jersey Devil!"
