The Soldier's Sighting

Location: Fort Dix, NJ Date: May, 1990

While on a training assignment with a squad of approximately 10 men, we decided to pitch camp in the woods on the very outskirts of the post. Fort Dix was very unfamiliar to me at the time because we had only been there about a week or so for a field training assignment. We had been issued the standard-sized two-man pup tents for sleeping. We had staked the tents into the ground in a circle-like fashion around the camp. We had no fire or any type of lights except for flashlights and flares. When darkness came, we each took turns keeping watch over the weapons while the other men slept.

I was awoken around 1:45am that night by the previous guy. I shook off the sleepy feeling I had while I sat just outside the camp. While sitting on a log with my weapon by my side, I flickered my light into the woods, which seemed extremely dark that night to me. While doing this, I heard a loud crunching noise to my left deep in the woods. I listened, and I heard the noise again - this time much closer than before. Standing up, I pointed my flashlight & strained my eyes to see what was making the noise. Just as I did this, something very big ran from my left to right side about twenty feet or so in front of me. I took a few steps towards the shape that had run by me. With my M-16 in hand, I walked with flashlight in hand towards the dark shape in the woods. Suddenly, the shape lunged at me and ran by my right side along the perimeter of the campsite. As I turned to get a better look, it stood up and had to be at least 6 ft tall. I was in shock and couldn't believe the size of it. I saw blinking green eyes as it gazed at me from the far side of the campsite.

The other guys started to wake up from all of the noise and crashing of branches. They crawled out of their tents and looked in the direction that I was staring. Apparently frightened, the devil ran off into the woods. All of my unit looked off with disbelief at what had just happened. We had decided not to report the incident to our command instructors. Our military lives were at stake.
