Steve's Sighting

Location: Waterford, NJ Date: Fall of 1987

At the time I was 18 or 19 years old and lived in the town of Atco. Like most teenagers, we were always on the hunt for someplace to "party". We found a little clearing off of a road called Burnt Mill Rd. This street is paved up to a point then turns into dirt and winds through the Wharton State Forest. This road is also known locally as a place where a ghost of a boy struck by a truck allegedly walks back and forth across the street.

Anyway, one night we were at this spot and heard a screaming sound that was nothing like we ever heard before, and mind you I grew up in these woods. This "animal" circled us for about an hour. You could not hear it move, but the scream would shift location. We heard this thing in that spot and another about a 1/2 mile away on at least a 1/2 dozen separate occasions.

At least a dozen of us had these experiences so it can't be chalked up to imagination. Although it was 20 yrs ago, and I've drifted apart from most of my teenage friends, if you questioned them you'd hear the same tale. In fact, when I was student teaching at Overbrook HS, which is not too far from the site, I told the story and the kids went to the spot and heard it too! That was 1991 or 92.

We never did see it, but we heard it on at least 6 different occasions. It was a shrill scream. I know it sounds melodramatic, but it sounded not quite animal, not quite human. It has been suggested that it was an owl, so I have listened to various owl calls, and they don't match. To this day I regret not taping it.
