The Class Trip Sighting |

I grew up in south Jersey. In 1987, I was in fifth grade. For our class trip, our teacher took us to the Pine Barrens. Though I don't remember much of it now, one thing still stays with me: I saw the Jersey Devil. We ate lunch outside that day. After lunch, we all decided to go on a hike through the woods. The week before our trip, our teacher had shown us lots of films and news specials on the Jersey Devil. Our group was divided into 4 smaller groups and it just happened that I was the only girl in our group. I got along really well with the guys in my class, but that day they all decided to pick on me. They knew I was scared after watching the videos.
As we walked down the trail, at one point my shoelace came undone. I bent down to tie it and my friend Mario stopped and waited for me. The rest of the gang left us. Before we knew it, we looked up and the rest of our gang was nowhere in sight. We started to run to find them, but saw nothing. Somewhere along the way, we lost the trail and ended up in the woods. I was scared out of my mind. Mario tried to be brave, but the stories had gotten to him, too. We kept running and yelling the names of those who were in our group. We were getting deeper and deeper into the woods.
Finally, we came across a small open field. We stopped to rest and that's when we heard the noise. It was like a woman screaming, but more high pitched. It got louder and louder and sounded like it was getting closer. We started running again. As we left the clearing, from the corner of my eye I saw what looked like a red, furry bear with horns. As I turned around, it disappeared into the trees and we heard the noise again, but this time getting fainter. We kept running and somehow came back to the trail again. It didn't take us long after that to find our group again.
After that day, neither of us talked about what we saw that day. We were too afraid, I guess. Since then, I've moved away, but during Christmas of '96, I saw Mario again when I went back to Jersey for a visit. We finally talked about that day. He agreed with me. He says he also saw a big furry thing that was the color red, a dark blood red. We still wonder to this day if what we saw was all just a part of the imaginations of two scared little children. |
